Legislative Update on Efforts to Improve POAB Benefits

The Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund recently sent an email update to members regarding ongoing efforts to improve benefits for POAB members and retirees.

In the message, members were informed that the Georgia House of Representatives and the Speaker remain supportive of efforts to strengthen POAB benefits. The House has some legitimate concerns regarding Senate Bill 285, which prompted further conversations about the best path forward.

The email explained that work is underway on a new proposal expected to be introduced next week by Representative Houston Gaines. An actuarial analysis will also be conducted later this year to determine the amount of revenue needed to support potential improvements to benefits.

The POAB Fund exists because of the men and women who serve their communities across Georgia. Members and retirees remain the reason POAB continues working with legislators to strengthen the Fund and improve benefits. That commitment continues to guide conversations at the Capitol as efforts move forward to achieve meaningful, lasting results for those who have dedicated their careers to public safety.

The update also explained that while Senate Bill 285 could have taken several years to produce the most important outcome—more money in the pockets of retirees—the alternative approach being explored has the potential to reach that goal more quickly.

The approach being considered would significantly increase the funding formula in Georgia code, raising it from $30 to $70, rather than relying on a multi-year cost-of-living adjustment approach.

POAB would like to thank members for their engagement with legislators throughout the process and encourage continued constructive communication as discussions move forward. The organization also appreciates the many members who have already taken the time to communicate with legislators in a respectful and constructive way. We encourage you to maintain a positive and constructive tone in online discussions and when communicating with legislators as these conversations move forward.

POAB will continue to share updates with members as additional information becomes available.
