Communications Officers Now Eligible
On April 25, 2022, Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 84 into law. As such, POST Certified Communications Officers are eligible to join the POAB Fund effective July 1, 2022.
OCGA 47-17-1, eligibility to be a member of the POAB fund is expanded to include, “Each communications officer, as such term is defined in Code Section 35-8-23, who is certified or maintains compliance with rules and regulations prescribed by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council with respect to such position”.
In OCGA 35-8-23, the term “communications officer” includes any person employed by the state or a local governmental agency who receives, processes, or transits public safety information and dispatch law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical personnel, or emergency management personnel.
Please note that membership is effective the day all required paperwork, dues, and fees are received. All complete applications for Communication Officers received prior to July 1, 2022, will be effective July 1, 2022.
Members are not eligible to purchase time served as Communications Officer prior to July 1, 2022.
