Urgent Action Needed: Support SB 285 Before March 6 Crossover Day
The Peace Officers’ Annuity & Benefit Fund (POAB) of Georgia sent out information regarding important legislation currently before the Georgia Senate. This communication was sent to all active, vested, retired, and military members as well as those who subscribed to receive our emails.
Senator Randy Robertson has been working diligently to improve benefits for POAB members and has drafted a substitute Senate Bill 285 (SB 285). Unlike the previous proposal, the substitute bill has no relationship to 911 fees.
What the Substitute Bill Proposes
Under the provisions of the substitute bill:
- A “public safety support surcharge” would be established on telephone services.
- The surcharge would be $1 per month per telephone service for monthly subscribers.
- A $1 surcharge per retail transaction would apply to purchases of prepaid wireless services.
The bill has successfully passed out of the Senate Retirement Committee and is now awaiting consideration by the full Senate.
Legislative Timeline
The bill must pass the Senate by Friday, March 6 (Crossover Day) in order to remain active during this legislative session.
Why This Matters
If enacted, the proposed legislation has the potential to represent one of the most significant financial enhancements to the POAB Fund in decades. The funding mechanism outlined in the substitute bill is designed to provide long-term financial support for the Fund and its members.
